Johann Gottlob von Wrochem (born June 17, 1938 in Greifenberg in Pomerania ; † July 8, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German pianist and composer .

Career

He was born as the second child of the farmer and later (Berlin-) Zehlendorf city councilor Hanswerner von Wrochem and Annemarie von Wrochem, born Herrmann born. He received his first piano lessons at the age of six and was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor in 1949 ; The 11-year-old's stay in the bombed Dresden left lasting memories.

He studied piano at the music academies in Detmold, Hamburg and Berlin (West), a. a. with Hans Richter-Haaser, Conrad Hansen and Heinrich Elter (concert exam 1963); However, the second-named was particularly influential, and Wrochem made this technique his own. He attended a master class given by Stefan Askenase, but rarely took part in competitions.

In addition to his solo activities (London debut 1970, Wigmore Hall ), festival appearances a. a. in Berlin, Osaka, Athens, von Wrochem was always active as a chamber musician, first for a short time with his brother Klaus von Wrochem ( Klaus the violinist ), from 1965 to 1979 with his brother ( Ulrich von Wrochem , viola) and 1983 to 2006 with his Son ( Claudius von Wrochem , cello). Some of Berlin's orchestral musicians, organists and university professors were also among his chamber music partners, as were singers. Due to his ability to acquire new pieces quickly, his solo and chamber music repertoire grew rapidly, and he became increasingly interested in unusual program concepts, rarely performed composers and contemporary music. This also included his commitment to the music of German and Jewish expellees (interpreter award of the Esslingen Artists' Guild in 1992) and his frequent participation in concerts by the Neue Musik group in Berlin (West).

The composers he premiered include Maki Ishii , Marek Kopelent , Makoto Shinohara , Isang Yun and others. v. a. As a soloist with orchestra, he performed the 5th piano concerto by Beethoven, the Mendelssohn concerto in G minor, the piano concerto by Khachaturjan, the polychromy by W. Steffen and the double concerto by KA Hartmann in Germany and Japan.

In 1964 he married the textile designer Renate von Wrochem (née Gabler), with whom he had sons Claudius and Johannes. In addition to English, French, Italian and Latin, he has dealt intensively with written and spoken Japanese and Hungarian for many years.

Teaching

Von Wrochem had been working as a piano teacher since the 1960s, initially at Berlin music schools, and now as a lecturer at the University of Education and the University of the Arts (today UdK) Berlin. In addition to teaching in Germany, he gave several courses in Japan and taught as a visiting professor at the American College of Greece in Athens.

Compositions

Von Wrochem was an autodidact as a composer, equipped with solid theoretical knowledge and perfect pitch. He acquired contemporary composition techniques selectively and according to interests, e.g. B. in its use of serial processes , random operations, graphic notation and scenic elements. The line-ups for which he wrote were often in autobiographical and professional contexts. Therefore works for piano and small chamber music ensembles predominate.
