The polymath Johann Heinrich Zopf (born April 6, 1691 in Gera ; † February 1, 1774 in Essen ), son of court preacher Johann Caspar Zopf and his wife Anna Katharina von Kretsch, author of numerous school books, was a pietist , teacher and historian .

Life

Johann Heinrich Zopf studied philosophy, theology and philology at the University of Jena from 1711 to 1715 , where he obtained his doctorate and qualified as a private lecturer. In 1716 he was offered a position as a teacher at the Pädagogium Halle . During the following three years he stayed there and got to know Gotthilf August Francke , with whom he also corresponded later. In 1719 he was appointed director of the Essen city school , a Lutheran grammar school. He held this position until his death in 1774. At the same time, as usual, he received a preacher position at the Marktkirche. On May 28, 1722 he married Juliana Elisabeth Krupp (August 19, 1702– May 1, 1749) from Essen, the daughter of the mayor Arnold Krupp. The marriage had fourteen children. Most died young, however. In 1724 he turned down an offer to become the director of the grammar school in Soest.

In 1729 he published his “Foundation of Universal History”, a very successful school book that had 17 new editions during his lifetime and was later even translated into French and updated as: Précis d'histoire universelle, politique, ecclésiastique et littéraire , depuis la création du monde jusqu'à la paix de Schœnbrunn, continuée sur un plan plus étendu, et augmentée d'une Histoire de la révolution française . As a school reformer who placed value on a practice-oriented education, Zopf supported his students decisively, the later reform pedagogues Johann Julius Hecker and Andreas Petrus Hecker . He inspired them early on for the ideas of Halle Pietism . In addition, the polymath was also interested in the phenomenon of vampirism.
