Johann Hemeling (arithmetic master)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Hemeling (* 1610-1615 in Hildesheim ; † December 9, 1684 in Hanover ) was a typist and arithmetic master. He was considered the Adam Riese of Lower Saxony.

Life

His father was the clerk of the Michaeliskloster and since 1614 in possession of the Hildesheimer civil rights.

From 1641 Johann Hemeling worked as a scribe in Hildesheim. In 1643 he was entered in the lap register of the Sutorum peasantry as clerk. Since he did not have to pay taxes, it is assumed that he tried to promote Hildesheim youth in his writing school. At that time reading was practiced with the Bible, liturgical texts and ancient textbooks. Writing was reserved for clerks.

In 1646 he moved to Hanover, where he was appointed head of the council office, which he headed until 1684. He appeared as the author of occasional writings (wedding poems , consolation and funeral pamphlets), hymns as well as four writing and ten arithmetic books. On January 16, 1656 he was commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand III. in the house of the mayor of Hanover Henning Lüdeken (1594–1663, lawyer) appointed poet crowned imperial .

His son, Johann Benedikt Hemeling († 1680) worked as a scribe in Hildesheim from 1667 to 1670 , before he returned to Hanover as a ducal chamber clerk.

He was buried with his second wife, who died 16 hours after him, in the market churchyard. In 1907 a street in Stöcken was named after him.
