The tomb of Dorothea Mehlbaum on the old St. Nicholas Cemetery in Hanover is a Grade II listed and presumably in 1654 by the sculptor Peter Koster created Standmal for alderman, captain of the jury and treasurer Lorenz Niemeyer and his wife Dorothea Mehlbaum.

family

Pastor Melchior Ludolph Sattler's “memory of honor” for Dorothea Mehlbaum can be summarized as follows in today's language: She was the daughter of the Hanoverian citizen Heizo Mehlbaum and Margareta Volckmers. She lost her father at the age of 12; through the death of her mother in 1616 she was ultimately an orphan; without supplier. Soon afterwards the virgin was married to the jury captain Lorentz Niemeyer on September 21, 1617 in Hanover - "with consensus and approval on both sides of the brothers and other close relatives ." Although the couple could not have children, the wife led a life described as impeccable as a loving housewife who stood by her husband in spite of the suspicions expressed against him by third parties at times. She worked threads with the spindle and worked wool and flax into fabrics. She cared for the poor and needy and eventually adopted an orphan for a child. The one described in Pastor Sattler's Christian obituary as virtuous and modest had wished during her lifetime to be buried with her grandparents and friends in the St. Nikolai cemetery.

At the end of her life, the previously regular churchgoer fell ill around Christmas 1653, but was able to at least partially recover for a short time after visiting the house of the city physician Hurlebusch senior , who died soon after, and then the court medicus Dietrich Konerding . After almost a year of illness, despite the drugs and medicines most recently prescribed by city physician Christian Busmann , she died in the presence of Magister Ludolph Walter , her confessor Justus Henricus Barnstorff and other Christian "matrons" during common prayer.

For the "Laurentii Neumeyers / Haus Zier" the typist and arithmetic master Johannes Hemeling wrote a funerary inscription, followed by a poem written in Latin by Johan Daniel Ludovici .

description

On the relief in the upper half of the picture, the Niemeyer-Mehlbaum couple frames a Pietà on which the Mater dolorosa is pierced by the sword. Above, God the Father is enthroned on a cross, vaulted by a pair of figures. In the background the three Golgotha crosses.

The personal inscription below the half of the picture of the 2.40 m high and 0.71 m wide work of art reads

"[...] Lorentz Niemeyer, council administrator, captain of the jury members and Camerararius, b. 1554 "

as well as the woman

"Dorothea Mehlbaums"

born January 1, 1589, died November 30, 1654.

When this privately commissioned stone was made when his partner died, Niemeyer was still alive. He did not die until 1663. He only received an official stone after his own death, with which the City of Hanover apparently wanted to honor him.

The tomb was erected in the “Memorial courtyard to S. Nicolai ” at the beginning of the 20th century .
