Melchior Ludolph Sattler (born October 9, 1618 in Hanover ; † May 6, 1676 there ) was a German Protestant clergyman .

Life

Melchior Ludolph Sattler was the son of the Hanoverian citizen and brewer Sattler and his wife Anna Langen or Langin, daughter of the pastor Ludolph Lange . Since his youth, the physically “weak constitution” saddler suffered repeatedly from various illnesses.

Sattler first learned at the municipal school in his hometown under Johann Strube , then in Lüneburg under Paul Blocius and at the school in Lübeck under Johann Kirchmann . After the beginning of the Thirty Years' War , he went to the University of Rostock for four years from 1619 , then briefly interrupted his studies to visit his parents, and several years later in 1643 finally went to the Academia Julia in Helmstedt , where he obtained his master's degree . As a result he received an inspection as Hofmeister from a "Herr von Croschecke ."

Sattler later lived in his parents' house again, taking particular care of his soon-to-be widowed mother. After the end of the war, he was appointed preacher of the Kreuzkirche in 1649 as the successor to the late Mento Deichmann . In the following year 1650 he married Anna Dorothea von Berckhausen, daughter of the Hanoverian citizen and patrician Hans von Berckhausen . The couple had four sons and nine daughters, two of whom did not survive their father. Sattler's eldest son was Melchior Rudolf Sattler , who later worked as a preacher in Hameln .

Sattler's works include the funeral sermon published in 1666 by the Hanoverian book printer Georg Friedrich Grimm for the princely Salzburg agent Jacob Lemcken and for Dorothea Mehlbaum .

Two years before his death, Sattler sustained an injury to his left eye. He had the "red flesh" growing there cut away because of the pain, but in the process he contracted a protracted fever from which he finally died at the age of only 57.

Portrait

A portrait of Sattler was found in the 1730s below the organ in the Kreuzkirche with the Latin inscription

"M. Melchior Ludolph Sattler Hanov. fidelis & orthodoxus Ecclesiae hujus Antiftes. Natus Anno 1618. Denatus 1676 "
