Mento Deichmann (and name variants; * January 2, 1610 in Steyerberg ; † November 13 or 23 , 1649 in Hanover ) was a German school principal and Protestant clergyman.

Life

Mento Deichmann was the son of Christoph Deichmann (or Christoffer Deichman) and Catharina Silings. After his first education by his parents and at the local school, he attended the city school in Hanover. After the early death of his parents, he was supported by friends and relatives. Deichmann received special support from the rector Johann Strube .

From 1632 Deichmann attended the University of Wittenberg , where he was taught mainly by the theologian Jakob Martini . After his return to Hanover, Melchior Reichard gave him the position of Preceptor for his son Melchior Albrecht Reichard . Together with Reichard, who was entrusted to him, and Jacob Türck , who later became a lawyer and doctor of both rights , Deichmann was sent to the University of Helmstedt . There he was tutored in particular by the theologians Georg Calixt and Conrad Horn , accepted as a Magister in 1638 and read well-respected philosophical “Collegia”.

After studying theology, Deichmann was appointed sub-director of the city of Hanover's Latin School , later the Ratsgymnasium , where he worked for around three years. In 1641 he became pastor and pastor at the Kreuzkirche in Hanover and worked there for almost nine years.

Deichmann married Anna Maria Walther, daughter of Ludolf Walther , on November 2, 1641 . The marriage had four daughters, three of whom survived their father.

In the last year of his life, Deichmann suffered hypothermia due to the weather in November 1649. Nevertheless, he performed his official duties in the local orphanage and performed his church service. He also had a fever. Despite medical treatment, Deichmann died ten days after his illness.

Deichmann died in November 1649 and was buried on November 28, 1649 in a crypt in the Church of the Holy Cross . The funeral sermon held Pastor George Erythropel .

Others

From the provenance of Mento Deichmann comes a philological manuscript from around 1630, which later came into the possession of Gerhard Molanus , abbot of the Loccum monastery . Its private library was later acquired by the Royal Library of Hanover , part of which, including the manuscript, was bought in 1734 by the Göttingen State and University Library of Lower Saxony .
