Johannes Hermannus Berends

Johannes Hermannus Berends (born April 4, 1868 in Utrecht , † July 24, 1941 in The Hague ) was the old Catholic bishop of Deventer .

Life

He was born the son of Theodorus Berends and Wilhelmina Crevers (or Cremoes). From September 3, 1881 he attended the seminary in Amersfoort and later studied Old Catholic theology, including in Bonn .

When he was ordained a priest on November 18, 1894, he was already a lecturer in church history (since September 4, 1893). On August 29, 1929 he was elected Bishop of Deventer and received the episcopal ordination of Archbishop Franciscus Kenninck on September 29, 1929 in The Hague . In 1936 he was President ( voorzitter ) of the Dutch Synod .

Together with Henricus van Vlijmen he was one of the first Old Catholic bishops to be involved in the ordination of Anglican bishops after the Bonn Agreement was signed.
