Nicolaus Spit

Nicolaus Bartholomeus Petrus Spit (born March 9, 1853 in Enkhuizen , † May 24, 1929 in Amersfoort ) was a Dutch Old Catholic clergyman and from 1892 until his death Bishop of Deventer .

Life

Youth, studies and priesthood

He was born the son of the merchant Hendricus Spit and Geertruida Maria van der Veer. After his training at the Old Catholic Seminary in Amersfoort, he was ordained a priest in 1879 . He was chaplain in Amersfoort and Egmond aan Zee . In the latter place he played an important role in the construction of a new church. In 1884 he was elected pastor of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Rotterdam - also called Paradijskerk . Here he also took part in the foundation of the magazine De Oud-Katholiek , initiated by Pastor JA van Beek . During his tenure in 1910, the Schuilkerk hidden in the old town was replaced by a new church building on the Nieuwe Binnenweg.

Episcopate

After Spit had become a member of the Metropolitan Chapter in 1892, he was appointed Bishop of Deventer on February 19, 1894 and received on May 30, 1895 by the Archbishop of Utrecht , Gerardus Gul , and the Bishops Casparus Johannes Rinkel (Haarlem) and Eduard Herzog ( Switzerland) episcopal ordination . As a motto he took the words from Psalm 73.28  EU ( Vulgate Psalm 72, 28): Spem In Te Posui (“I have put my hope in you”). He exercised the office of bishop in addition to his pastoral office in Rotterdam.

In 1907 he was co-consecrator at the episcopal ordination of Franciszek Hodur for the Polish National Catholic Church, and in 1909 he was also co-consecrator at the episcopal ordination of Jan Maria Michał Kowalski for the Old Catholic Church of the Mariavites . In 1913 he became dean of the Metropolitan chapter and archpriest ( dean ) of Schieland and South Holland. In 1922 he retired from office to Amersfoort.

The last years of his life were characterized by increasing hearing loss and visual impairment.
