Johann I (Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann the child (born November 29, 1329 , † December 21, 1340 in Landshut ) ruled the Wittelsbach sub-duchy of Lower Bavaria for a year from 1339 to 1340 after the death of his father Heinrich XIV .

Life

Johann was the only child of Duke Heinrich XIV. Of Bavaria (as Heinrich II. Duke of Lower Bavaria) and Margarete of Bohemia, a daughter of King John the Blind . He was betrothed to Elisabeth, a daughter of the Polish king Casimir I , as a child in 1335 . This engagement and another engagement with a daughter of Count Palatine Rudolf II were dissolved and Johann married on April 18, 1339 in Munich to Anna, the daughter of Ludwig of Bavaria . Associated with the marriage was a peace agreement between Heinrich von Niederbayern and Ludwig the Bavarian. When Duke Heinrich died in September 1339, Ludwig took over the guardianship of his son-in-law.

After Johann's death in December of the following year at the age of only eleven, the Lower Bavarian part-duchy fell to Ludwig the Bavarian, who already ruled the part-duchy of Upper Bavaria and was thus able to reunite the two duchies after their division in 1255. Johann the child was buried in the Seligenthal monastery.
