Johann I von Rosenberg (Czech Jan I. z Rožmberka ) († September 1, 1389 in Wittingau ), came from the Bohemian aristocratic Rosenberg family .

Life

His parents were Peter I. von Rosenberg and Katharina von Wartenberg († 1355). Johann had the siblings:

  • Heinrich II. († 1346)
  • Peter II († 1384)
  • Jost († 1369)
  • Ulrich I , († 1390)
  • Anna († 1388), married to Heinrich V. von Leipa
  • Mecela († 1380), married to Johann von Leuchtenberg, Count von Hals
  • NN, married to Tobias Bechin von Kamenice

After the father's death in 1347, the third-born son Jost became regent of the Rosenberg family, as the eldest Heinrich II was already dead and Peter I belonged to the clergy. In 1367 the brothers Jost, Peter, Ulrich and Johann founded the Augustinian monastery in Wittingau , the initiative presumably coming from Peter. After Jost's death in 1369, Ulrich I followed in the reign of the Rosenbergs. For reasons unknown, the brothers Ulrich, Peter and Johann shared the property in 1374. Ulrich received the rest of the Rosenberg possessions together with Peter , Gratzen and Johann, with Johann taking over the management of the property. Therefore he lived alternately in Wittigau and Krumau . On March 17, 1376, Johann and Peter granted the city of Wittingau the right of repudiation and on September 8, 1376 the rights of a royal city. In 1384 Johann founded together with his brother Peter and Ulrich's son Heinrich III. von Rosenberg the Paulaner monastery in Heuraffl . In 1384 Johann I and Peter I donated a house for impoverished priests in Wittingau. In some documents from Emperor Charles IV , Johann is mentioned as a witness.

With a contract from 1384 it was agreed that after the death of the last brother the Rosenberg possessions should be reunited. Since Johann died a year before his brother Ulrich, he never achieved the position of regent. Ulrich's son Heinrich III reached this position in 1390.

Johann I was married to Elisabeth von Hals ( Alžběta z Halže ; † 1384). The marriage remained childless. In 1380 Elisabeth, together with her sister-in-law Agnes von Walsee , the widow of Jost von Rosenberg, founded a foundation for a Bohemian preacher at the St. Vitus Church in Krumau.

After his death, Johann was buried in the family vault of the St. Giles Church in Wittingau.
