Live and act

Johann came from the Chalon-Arlay sideline of the House of Burgundy-Ivrea . He was the son of Hugo I , Lord of Arlay and his wife Beatrix de la Tour du Pin († 1347). When Odo IV , Duke of Burgundy, inherited the Free County of Burgundy in 1330 , Johann became one of the leaders of the nobility of the Free County, who rose up against Otto, but in 1337 had to face the judgment of the French King Philip VI. - a brother-in-law of Odo IV. - who sentenced Johann to symbolic imprisonment. In 1346 Johann rebelled again, this time with the help of the English King Edward III. , whereupon Philip had to mediate a peace again in 1348. Johann ceded the claims to the Dauphiné inherited from his mother to the French king.
