Johann is said to come from a noble family from the Sandomir area . Together with his brother he founded the Cistercian monastery Jędrzejów near Kraków in 1140 . He was Provost of Wroclaw and Canon of Gniezno and Cracow .

After the death of Wroclaw Bishop Robert II , Johann was elected as his successor. Duke Bolesław IV approved the election.

After the death of the Gniezno Archbishop Jakob I von Żnin , Johann was transferred to the Gnesen archbishopric.

Most recently, he appears in a document at the end of 1167 as a participant in a synod in Jędrzejów , where he issued a certificate of a privilege for the Jędrzejów monastery . The contemporary necrologies only give the date of his death without a year: March 11th ( necrology of Lubin ) or March 12th ( necrology of St. Vincent near Breslau ). His successor from Gniezno, Zdzisław I, is only documented from April 26, 1177. The years 1168 to 1176/7 come into consideration as the year of Johann’s death.
