Johann III. from Schönberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann III. von Schönberg († September 26, 1517 in Zeitz ) was bishop of Naumburg from 1492 to 1517 .

origin

Johann III. von Schönberg came from the von Schönberg family , who repeatedly provided bishops in the dioceses of Naumburg and Meißen. He succeeded his uncle Dietrich IV von Schönberg as bishop and had been his coadjutor since 1483. His parents were Heinrich von Schönberg († 1507) auf Stollberg , ducal councilor and captain of Schellenberg and Wolkenstein, and Ilse, née Pflugk .

Life

Johann III. studied in Leipzig and Cologne. He became cathedral dean of Magdeburg, canon of Meißen, provost in Bautzen and cathedral scholaster in Meißen. Pope Innocent VIII appointed the coadjutor bishop against the protest of the cathedral chapter. The productive silver mining on the Schneeberg was continued. Johann III. used an unusually large number of family members in the spiritual offices around him, including two of his brothers. At the end of life, there are indications of a temporary spiritual confusion on the part of the bishop. In 1511 the cathedral chapter appointed canon Vincenz von Schleinitz as coadjutor - with the help of the Wettins , Philip of the Palatinate won through for this task. He was buried in Naumburg Cathedral , a bronze plaque from his tomb has been preserved.
