Johann Jakob Friedrich Sinnhold

Johann Jakob Friedrich Sinnhold (* around 1735 ; † March 4, 1805 in Erfurt ) was a classical philologist , philosopher , university professor and Freemason in Erfurt.

Life

Sinnhold grew up as the son of Johann Nikolaus Sinnhold (* 1695) and his wife Martha Dorothea Stiede in Erfurt and had 4 siblings. His father, who died in 1748, was a scholar at the University of Erfurt and had a. a. contributed to a book about their history.

Johann Jakob studied ancient languages ​​and philosophy. In 1772 he became a teacher at the Erfurt grammar school and in the same year he was appointed professor for the Greek language at the University of Erfurt. On July 30, 1782 he became head of the university's Saxon College . This college , founded in 1520 by the Hildesheim provost Tilo Brandis , was first there after the University of Helmstedt was founded and then moved to the University of Göttingen . It was only re-affiliated to the University of Erfurt in 1782 through a decision by the Reich Chamber of Commerce. The college was initially based in Sinnhold's house in Querchgasse "Zum Grauen Rock", later Eichengasse 7.

Sinnhold was rector of the University of Erfurt twice and in this function had to organize the celebrations for the 400th anniversary in 1792. In 1804 he succeeded Johann Joachim Bellermann as director of the Erfurt grammar school, but was only able to fill this position for one year due to his early death.

Activity as a Freemason

On April 30, 1784 he founded together with the professors Johann Friedrich Weißenborn (medical), Johann Justin Weißmantel (lawyer) and 4 other gentlemen one of the first Erfurt Masonic lodges, which was called " To the Three Sources ", and he became the master of the Chair of the lodge chosen. After the lodge had to be closed two years later because the constitutional patent obtained from a Hildesheim student had proven to be a forgery, he also participated in the founding of the successor lodge " Carl zu den drei Wheels ", of which he also became a master of the chair . Due to the events after the French Revolution, however, this lodge had to end its activities in 1794.

Sinnhold was married to Maria Christina Schernitz (born March 27, 1755). He had two sons and five daughters with her, who were born in 1779–1794.
