Leitzmann studied Protestant theology in Halle and was a Protestant pastor in Tunzenhausen from 1831, where he celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of ordination in 1875 . During his entire tenure he also emerged as a numismatist and published in this field as early as 1827.

The "Numismatic Newspaper" he founded appeared from 1834 to 1873 in Weißensee . Leitzmann was also the author of a number of important works on minting, some of which are still valid today. His extensive coin collection was auctioned in Leipzig in 1880.

In 1841 his continuation of the bibliography of numismatic works published by Johann Gottfried Lipsius in 1801 as Bibliotheca numaria appeared . In 1867 a second, greatly increased edition was published, which was part of the numismatic standard literature worldwide until the 1980s, when, after around 140 years, Philip Grierson's Bibliographie numismatique (1979) and the Numismatic Bibliography by Elvira E. Clain-Stefanelli (1984) was replaced.
