Johann Jakob Schäfer

Johann Jakob Schefer (born February 12, 1822 in Herisau ; † September 15, 1881 in the same place ; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss builder and architect from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johann Schefer was a son of Johannes, goldsmith and councilor, and Anna Katharina Fisch. In 1849 he married Anna Katharina Früh, daughter of Johann Ulrich Früh, a manufacturer . Schefer studied at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic . He worked as a builder and architect in Herisau. In the 1860s and 1870s, Schefer carried out important public buildings in Ausserrhoden and Toggenburg . Some of the plans later came from his son Otto Schefer . He succeeded him as an architect. Schefer played a key role in transforming the village of Herisau into a small town . He was a member of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA).
