Johann Joachim Schümann (1819)

Johann Joachim Schümann (* 1776 in Grömitz ; † 1861 in Lübeck ) was a German captain in Lübeck. He published an account of how he escaped captivity by Algerian pirates in 1817 .

His ship, the "Industrie", was boarded on July 3rd, 1817 on the voyage from Riga to Corril ( Spain ). However, he succeeded in overpowering the enemy superiority by cunning and brought his ship back to Lisbon . His booty, rifle and Turkish saber, are exhibited today in the Schiffergesellschaft in Lübeck.

His report on arrest and liberation appeared in the Hamburg Correspondent in 1818 .
