The Schiffergesellschaft in Lübeck describes a seafarers' association that has existed since the early modern era and at the same time a historic building that now houses a restaurant.

Society

The Schiffergesellschaft Lübeck was founded on December 26, 1401 as the St. Nicholas Brotherhood. The meaning and purpose of this association can be found in the following words from the founding document: "To help and comfort the living and dead and all who seek their honest livelihood in shipping." Since almost all religious brotherhoods dissolved in the course of the Reformation , they united the St. Nicholas Brotherhood with the St. Anne's Brotherhood. They called themselves the Schippern Selschup and in 1535 they bought a house built in the 13th century for 940 Lübische Marks on the corner of Breite Strasse and Engelsgrube across from the Jakobikirche in Lübeck .

Despite the Reformation, the brotherhood's religious ties were not lost. Colossal statues of Saint Nicholas and Anna the third were kept in the newly acquired house . Food and living space are made available for the elderly and the needy.

Over the years, thanks to the seafaring knowledge of its brothers, the shipping company was given additional tasks such as issuing ship's passports, guarding the port and advising the Senate. The Hanseatic maritime law of 1614 stipulated that disputes between seafarers had to be submitted to the shipping company.

The Schiffergesellschaft was not subject to the guild constitution, but Lübeck boatmen had to be members of the society and statutes required the approval of the city council.

When the compulsory guild expired in 1866 by a trade law, the majority of the members of the Schiffergesellschaft decided to continue the organization as a free cooperative and to represent and support the commercial interests of its members. However, the new legal status quickly resulted in high debts, so that they felt compelled to sell the historic building. From then on it was operated as a restaurant and has been preserved as such to this day. With Schiffergesellschaft in Lübeck today the building of the former brotherhood is meant. The Schiffergesellschaft community still exists and pursues its dedicated tasks. In 2019 she took on the first woman with the 33-year-old captain Silke Muschitz, who travels on a large container ship of the Hapag-Lloyd-Linie. She is known as the "ship's sister".

The guild house of the Schiffergesellschaft

The house of the Schiffergesellschaft opposite the Jakobikirche in Lübeck was bought as a guild house in 1535 and rebuilt until 1538 and has been preserved to this day. By integrating neighboring buildings, it was possible to create 18 apartments for the guild brothers.

The building of the former Lübeck shipping company at Breiten Straße 2 was built in the early Renaissance style. This phase of the brick renaissance is still extremely difficult to distinguish from brick Gothic for the layman. In front of the entrance you have a view of the so-called God's cellar, a golden weather vane with a sailing ship as a motif on the gable and a painting with the eagle of Lübeck . The building, which, like large parts of Lübeck's old town, is a listed building, survived the Second World War unscathed. The interior was restored between 1972 and 1976.

Today the former guild hall is operated as a restaurant and pub. Hans Leip coined the phrase "The most classic pub in the world".

Under the direction of the managing directors at the time, Wolfgang Steffen and Gerhard Birnstingl, the Schiffergarten was opened in the backyard in 2005 , where guests can sit outdoors. On March 1, 2015, Frank Höhne and Michael Engel took over the restaurant.

Furnishing

The rows of benches are banquets , which are provided with cheekbones, which used to be used to mark the tables of the various shipping companies ( mountain drivers , Schonen drivers , etc.) by means of coats of arms . Numerous models of old sailing ships hang from the ceiling. On the walls are nine paintings from 1624 showing passages from the Bible. A variety of maritime objects are displayed in wall showcases. Probably the oldest dated, fully preserved kayak is in the skipper's company , probably from a Danish expedition to Greenland in 1605/06.

Some statues of saints, which probably originate from the Jakobikirche and were part of the boatmen's society for centuries, can be found today in the St. Anne's Museum. These include a enthroned bishop (St. Nicholas?) From around 1401 and an Anna herself from around 1480/90. Even today in the Schiffergesellschaft there is a monumental statue of St. James from the end of the 15th century, a visitation of Mary from around 1450/60, a vault-end disc (around 1500) with a representation of the Madonna of the moon and a painting with a representation of the Good Samaritan (probably 2nd half of the 16th century).

Previous owner

One of the traditional previous owners of the property at Breite Straße 2 was the Lübeck foreign politician Johann van Doway in the 13th century .
