Johann Josef Demmel

Johannes Josef Demmel (also Hans-Josef Demmel ; born September 5, 1890 in Regensburg , † November 30, 1972 in Bonn ) was the sixth bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Germany .

Life

The son of the Munich businessman Anton Demmel graduated from the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich in 1911 , which he entered in 1904. Then he studied Old Catholic theology in Bonn . On September 26, 1915 he was ordained a priest . In the following years he was vicar in Offenbach am Main and parish administrator of the community of Hessloch . Demmel did his military service during the First World War. From 1919 he was pastor in Furtwangen , then from 1921 pastor in Cologne and from 1942 pastor and dean in Munich.

On August 7, 1951, he was elected bishop coadjutor with 86 out of 145 votes . His episcopal ordination took place in Essen . In 1953 he became bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Germany. In 1955 he was honored with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1966 he retired.

Johann Josef Demmel was married to Tily Demmel.
