Johann Karall

Johann Karall (born February 28, 1934 in Großwarasdorf ; † December 15, 2008 ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and state official. Karall was a member of the Burgenland state parliament , from 1982 to 1987 regional councilor in the Burgenland state government and national team coach of the Austrian national basketball team .

education and profession

Karall attended elementary school in Großwarasdorf and then graduated from the Bundesrealschule Vienna I , where he passed the Matura in 1952. He then studied at the cultural engineering faculty of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and graduated in 1958 with the academic degree Dipl.-Ing. from. As a result, he was from 1957 to 1958 as an assistant at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. Karall was also active as a competitive athlete, was multiple national basketball champions between 1952 and 1960 and also coached the Austrian men's national team. With the Union Basketball Club Eisenstadt in 1962 he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga, making the club the first ball playing club in Burgenland in a top division. On December 31, 1958, he finally entered the service of the Burgenland provincial government, where he was employed as a civil servant in the freight road construction department. In 1965 he rose to the head of the department. Karall was appointed State Agrarian Councilor in 1967, Chief Agricultural Councilor in 1972 and in 1977 to the real Councilor. In 1999 Karall retired as head of the freight transport department. Johann Karall initiated the modern construction of freight roads in Burgenland: Between 1959 and 1998, a total of 3,042 kilometers of - mostly asphalt - roads were built under his aegis. Before 1959, there were only around 200 kilometers of mostly gravel-paved goods roads in Burgenland.

politics

Karall represented the ÖVP between May 14, 1968 and July 4, 1982 in the Burgenland Landtag, and from 1978 to 1982 he also acted as ÖVP club chairman. From July 5, 1982 to October 30, 1987, he was regional councilor in the Burgenland regional government, where he was responsible for kindergartens, compulsory and vocational schools, traffic issues and nature and landscape protection. After leaving the state government, he was again a member of the state parliament from October 30, 1987 to July 18, 1991. Until he left the state parliament, Johann Karall was considered a consistent opponent of cooperation between the ÖVP and the Freedom Party from Burgenland .

Within the party, Karall was also a regional party organizer from 1971 to 1974 and from 1974 to 1990 he was the district party chairman in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district . In addition, from 1972 to 1981 he was chairman of the state staff representation and from 1974 to 1989 chairman of the public service union , administration section.

Sports

In the Austrian basketball scene, Johann Karall enjoyed a high reputation as a top athlete under his athlete name "Bacsi" since the early 1950s. He and his team “Union Babenberg Wien” have won several national championships.

He also took part in the European Basketball Championships in 1955 (13th place) and 1957 (14th place), in which he averaged 11 in 1955 and in 1957, 8.7 points per game.

After his active sports career, he worked as a trainer and president of the Burgenland basketball association. During his time as President of the Burgenland Basketball Association from 1990 to 2005, the Burgenland clubs enjoyed a national boom. After he left the board of directors of the BBV, he continued to work as honorary president.

Private

Karall was born as the son of the farmer Johann Karall from Großwarasdorf and grew up speaking the Burgenland-Croatian language . He was married and lived in Eisenstadt.
