Johann Lambert Joseph Comes
Johann Lambert Joseph Comes (* December 23, 1774 in Cochem ; † April 7, 1856 there ) was a German district doctor and local researcher.
life and career
Johann Lambert Joseph Comes was the son of the surgeon Johann Nikolaus Comes and the pharmacist's daughter Anna Maria Pliester and was thus directly related to Father Martin von Cochem . Johann Comes married Katharina Schlink from Koblenz . After attending the Capuchin School in Cochem, he began studying theology in Trier . Then he studied medicine in Würzburg . He obtained his doctorate on September 17, 1803. Initially he is said to have worked as a doctor in Karden , but soon moved his practice to his nearby hometown of Cochem. As early as 1803 he was the district doctor for the Mairien Münstermaifeld, Gondorf, Brodenbach, Obergondershausen, Karden and Treis. In 1804 he was the first doctor to start vaccinating against cowpox . He was considered a particularly capable vaccinator. In 1817 he was appointed Prussian district physician for the Cochem district, which he remained until 1849. In 1839 he received the honorary title of "Hofrat" for his services to vaccinations. In 1853 he received the Order of the Red Eagle III on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a doctor . Class.
In addition to his medical work, he dealt extensively with the discovery and research of Roman antiquities in his area and, over the years, brought together a collection of Roman finds, oil paintings, glass paintings and handicrafts of all kinds, including manuscripts and incunabula . Comes lived in Cochem on Bernstrasse in the house built in 1775 and completely rebuilt in 1896, which was later taken over by the master baker Roters as Café Roters . Today the Alt Cochem restaurant is located there . In the meanwhile demolished archway (Nordtor or Koblenzer Tor) above Bernstrasse between the Comesche Haus and the Hotel Germania there was a skull and skeleton collection, which, however, served more scientific purposes. This uninviting cabinet was popularly known as Hell .
Johann Comes was an honorary member of the Society for Useful Research in Trier , to which he bequeathed the prehistoric studies and Roman finds from his collection in his will. In 1819 he was the first to point out the Moselle winemakers to the so-called smoking of the vineyards in the dangerous spring frost nights.
