Johann Leonhard Dober

Johann Leonhard Dober (born March 7, 1706 in Mönchsroth ; † April 1, 1766 in Herrnhut ) was a bishop and missionary of the Moravian Brethren .

Johann Leonhard Dober learned his father's pottery trade . The Dober family was connected to the Moravians. She got to know the free church community through Pastor Deublin, Greiselbach (today: Wilburgstetten community ).

After his apprenticeship, Dober traveled to Herrnhut to personally get to know the Zinzendorf Brethren there. In 1730 he finally entered the service of the Free Church. In 1732 he and David Nitschmann were sent together as the first missionaries of the Moravian Brethren to set up a mission station on the St. Thomas Islands / West Indies .

In 1735 Dober returned to Herrnhut and became a member of various church governing bodies. He went on numerous trips and most recently worked as a senior teacher at the Marienborn Abbey Educational Institution (Büdingen) . In 1747 he was ordained a bishop.

Dober died on April 1, 1766 in Herrnhut.
