Johann Ludwig Casper (born March 11, 1796 in Berlin ; † February 24, 1864 there ) was a German forensic doctor .

Live and act

As a medical student he wrote the libretti for the first four operas by the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy . Under the pseudonym Till Ballistarius he published the romantic tragedy Die Karfunkel-Weihe in 1818 . Casper was full professor for Medicina forensis and Medicina publica at the University of Berlin from 1839 until his death in 1864 .

Johann Ludwig Casper died in Berlin in 1864 at the age of 67 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved. The Casper rule is also named after him, a rough estimate of the lying time of corpses.

His nephew Carl Liman was also a forensic doctor and continued to publish the handbook of forensic medicine from the 5th edition (1871) .
