Johann Martin Bernatz

Johann Martin Bernatz (born March 22, 1802 in Speyer ; † December 19, 1878 ) was a German landscape painter .

Life

Matthäus Bernatz's brother was destined for his father's job of chimney sweep, but had to give up this job in 1826 after suffering from pneumonia. As a skilled draftsman, he attended the Polytechnic School in Vienna with his brother. Under Joseph Kellerhagen's direction he learned oil painting in Speyer and switched to architectural painting from 1827-29.

In August 1829 he moved to Munich.

In 1836 he accompanied Gotthilf Heinrich Schubert and Michael Pius Erdl as a painter and draftsman on their trip to the Orient via Constantinople through Asia Minor , Palestine and the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt .

He then accompanied Johannes Roth on the East India expedition, where they arrived in Calcutta on the New Year of 1841 .
