Johannes Roth (zoologist)

Johannes Rudolf Roth (born September 4, 1815 in Munich , † June 26, 1858 in Hasbeya on Mount Hermon , Lebanon ) was a German zoologist and explorer .

Roth was the son of the lawyer and royal Bavarian State Councilor and senior consistorial president Friedrich von Roth (1780-1852) and Katharina Merkel (1792-1842).

Life

In his hometown he studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Munich .

He accompanied his teacher Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert (1780-1860) on his research trip to Egypt and Palestine in 1836/1837 . From 1839 he toured the East Indies and the north west coast of Africa for scientific research. In the years 1841/1842 he stayed in Djibouti .

In 1843 he became professor of zoology at the University of Munich . Since 1846 he was an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1852 he made a second and in 1856 a third trip to Palestine. On this last trip he died in Hasbeya at the age of 37.
