Matthäus Bernatz

Matthäus Bernatz (born April 21, 1800 in Speyer ; † February 12, 1882 ) was a German hydrotechnician or hydraulic engineer and Bavarian construction officer .

Life

His father was a master bricklayer and chimney sweep . Like his younger brother Johann Martin Bernatz , Matthäus Bernatz initially worked as a chimney sweep. He attended the grammar school and lyceum in Speyer and from 1821 the Vienna Polytechnic and the University of Vienna . In 1825 he passed the examination for the Bavarian civil service with distinction.

In 1827 he became a building manager (building supervisor) in Kempten and in 1829 in Straubing , in 1834 a district engineer , building inspector in Deggendorf , and in 1840 a government and district building officer in Landshut . From 1855 he worked in the rank of senior building officer at the Supreme Building Authority in the State Ministry of Trade and Public Works in Munich. In 1870 he retired.

As the most capable hydrotechnician of his time, he excelled in the development of German river engineering. The Grand Duchy of Baden awarded him the Zähringer Order of the Lion and the Kingdom of Bavaria the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael .

His three sons, August , Karl and Franz (* 1841 in Munich) excelled in the construction industry.
