Johann Martin Graack (* 1816 in Arnis ; † January 12, 1899 in Kiel ) was a German lithographer and photographer who photographed all members of the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel until 1865 . He was one of the "free-thinking men of Schleswig-Holstein".

Life

Johann Martin Graack came from a captain's family and was born in Arnis an der Schlei . After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Arnis, he worked for the Behrens und Fritz lithography company at the age of twenty. At that time, views by Kappeln and Arnis based on his models were published. From 1836 he studied in Copenhagen with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and Johann Ludwig Lund . After graduating, he hoped for a travel grant from the Danish royal family. For this purpose, he produced lithographs of important personalities, including the Duke of Augustenburg , who was then considered heir to the throne. However, since this was defeated in the dispute over the succession, Graack had no chance of being promoted in Copenhagen. He therefore moved to Kiel, where he saw the opportunities that photography offered early on. In 1853 he opened a photo studio in Kiel on the corner of Dänische Strasse and Burgstrasse. Since 1880 he was a member of the board of the Kunstverein in Kiel and other associations of artists.

Graack was involved in the exhibitions of the Art Academy in Copenhagen until 1845, with portraits made as lithographs . During the naval battle in the Bay of Eckernförde in 1849, he was able to make sketches as an eyewitness and processed them into lithographs, which make such representations as that of the marine painter Carl Saltzmann from 1894 appear excessive. In 1857 he contributed three works to the opening exhibition of the Kiel art gallery. His album with portraits of all members of the University of Kiel is of great value today.
