Johann Nepomuk Konstantin Schuster , Hungarian János Konstanz Schuster , also Janus Pannonius (pseudonym), (* May 4, 1777 in Fünfkirchen , Holy Roman Empire ; † May 19, 1838 in Pest , Austrian Empire , year of death is also mentioned in literature with 1831 and 1838) was a Hungarian-German chemist , mineralogist , doctor and university professor .

Life

Schuster studied medicine in Pest between 1796 and 1800 and obtained the title of Dr. med. In 1804 and 1805 he made a study trip through Germany, during which he heard lectures by the chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth in Berlin . In 1808 he was appointed professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the Lyceum in Cluj- Napoca in Transylvania . In 1809 he moved to the University of Pest, where he was appointed professor of biology .

In 1809, in the course of the last Hungarian aristocratic uprising against Napoleon Bonaparte, he was appointed field doctor and made great contributions in combating epidemics. In 1811 Schuster took up his chair for chemistry at the University of Pest again. He became dean of the medical faculty and rector of the university in 1821/22. He cataloged the natural science departments of the Hungarian National Museum . In 1831 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences appointed him a full member. With his legal knowledge, Schuster was appointed table judge of Baranya County in 1836 .

In addition to many specialist articles in German and Latin , he wrote 14 books, two of them in Hungarian . He translated Latin and French texts into German. Schuster is considered to be the founder of the Hungarian terminology for chemistry and medicine.
