Johann Nepomuk Meintel (born March 5, 1816 in Horb am Neckar , died December 14, 1872 ibid.) Was a German carver and painter .

Life

After attending primary school, Meintel completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Horb . Meintel had been doing this job in Munich since 1835. At the same time, he was introduced to the art of carving in the sculptor's studio of Johann Evangelist Riedmüller (1815–1895). Through Riedmüller, Meintel found entry into the Munich artist circle. Above all, the friendship with Anselm Sickinger (1807–1873) was decisive for Meintel's artistic development, since Sickinger, with his altar-building studio, was one of the most important representatives of neo-Gothic church art , which at that time was booming and could count on an abundance of orders.

In 1840 Meintel returned to Horb and set up his own studio for Christian art in his parents' house on Neckarstrasse. In the first years of his independence, Meintel supplied the workshops of Riedmüller and Sickinger in Munich with sculptures . Soon, however, Meintel was also receiving orders from the region, so that after his wedding he moved into a larger house, also on Neckarstrasse, which covered the increased space requirements of the studio, as Meintel had meanwhile also employed assistants. From the middle of the century Meintel had established an altar building workshop in Horb, and his studio quickly developed into its own sculpture school for Christian art.

Since Meintel's estate was largely destroyed in a fire, it is no longer possible to determine the full extent of the church furnishings realized by his workshop , especially since many of his works were scattered and destroyed in the 20th century. The art historian Paul Meintel was his grandson.

Remarks

  1. ↑ In 1843 Meintel had married Caroline Gessler (1820–1847) from Horb. After their untimely death, he married Xaveria Fischer from Rottweil (born 1817) a second time. The two marriages resulted in four sons: Karl Borromäus Friedrich Meintel (1844–1880), sculptor; Johann Nepomuk Meintel (1845–1872), confectioner; Paul Meintel (1851–1904), gardener and Franz Xaver Meintel (1852–1919), Kgl. Chancellery.
  2. The Horber sculpture school, which emerged from Meintel's studio, comprises over 50 artists. It has shaped church interiors in a wide area and stands for one of the most important German production centers for sacred art in the 19th century.
