Johann Philipp Krebs
Johann Philipp Krebs (born July 7, 1771 in Glaucha near Halle ; † September 28, 1850 in Weilburg ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.
Life
Krebs was educated at the humanistic grammar school in Halle (Saale) and studied classical philology with Friedrich August Wolf in Halle from 1788–95 . In 1795 he became a collaborator at the Philippinum grammar school in Weilburg . In 1800 he was appointed Conrector. Until his retirement in 1837 he taught and researched at the Philippinum. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary as a teacher and researcher, the city of Weilburg held a festival in his honor in 1845.
Krebs is the author of numerous Latin textbooks that were widely distributed in the 19th century. He was particularly concerned with Latin stylistics and published a work Instructions for Writing Latin , the third edition of which in 1822 contained the much-received anti-barbarus of the Latin language for the first time , which makes important statements about the classical use of Latin. The Antibarbarus was decoupled from the work in 1832 and has been reissued several times since then. It also appeared in English ( Guide for Writing Latin in translation by Samuel H. Taylor, 1845). After the death of Krebs, Franz Xaver Allgayer got the fifth edition in 1867. The seventh, last edition by Joseph Hermann Schmalz appeared in 1907 and was last reproduced in 1984.
Krebs also wrote a Greek grammar. His son Rudolf Krebs (1804–1881), who also taught at the Weilburger Gymnasium, published the sixth edition in 1836.
