Köhler (1662–1710), pastor's daughter from Oberweymar near Marburg. Seip is considered to be the progenitor of the lower branch of the Pyrmont family.

Johann Philipp studied medicine in Halle , London and at several Dutch universities and received his doctorate in 1709 .

In 1712 he returned to his hometown and concentrated therapeutically and journalistically on the healing effects of the Pyrmont springs. In 1719 he opened a spa pension on Brunnenstrasse . Around the same time he became aware of carbon dioxide escaping from a quarry , recognized its beneficial effect on skin blood flow and made the area accessible to those seeking healing as a vapor cave .

Seip looked after numerous prominent spa guests, including Tsar Peter the Great , Friedrich II of Prussia , Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and his sovereign Anton Ulrich von Waldeck-Pyrmont , whom he served as court doctor and personal physician . His writings have also been translated into English and Dutch.

Seip was married to Anna Christina, born on November 27, 1712. Nölting (1687–1756), daughter of a local merchant. Ten children are known, of whom the sons (Johann Christoph) Ludwig Seip (* 1717) and Anton (Ludwig) Seip (* 1723) are of genealogical importance as the progenitors of a Hamburg and Mecklenburg branch of the family. Another son, (Friedrich Georg) Philipp Seip (1726–1758), made it to the electoral Hanoverian court doctor.
