Johann Rudolf Holzhalb (* 1723 in Zurich ; † September 21, 1806 there ) was a Swiss engraver , etcher , draftsman , publisher and governor from the circle of Zurich amateurs.

Life

Johann Rudolf Holzhalb was born in 1723 into a patrician family in Zurich. The Holzhalb had acquired Zurich citizenship in 1350 and worked as merchants, manufacturers and municipal officials. Johann Rudolf Holzhalb completed an apprenticeship as a copper engraver with David Herrliberger . In the 1750s he started his own business as an engraver and publisher. Holzhalb created numerous copper engraving portraits, maps and illustrations for Zurich and Winterthur New Year's newspapers as well as book publications. His illustrations for Johann Caspar Ulrich's collection of Jewish stories and his portraits for Johann Kaspar Lavater's Physiognomic Fragments are of particular value . Holzhalb designed and engraved numerous bookplates . Theodor Falkeisen and Adrian Zingg were among his students . From 1798 until his death, Johann Rudolf Holzhalb was bailiff of Knonau . He died on September 21, 1806 in Zurich.
