Johann Caspar Ulrich

Johann Caspar Ulrich (* 1705 in Steinegg in Thurgau ; † February 27, 1768 in Zurich ) was a Reformed pastor of a pietistic direction from Switzerland who was the first to research the history of Swiss Jews .

biography

Ulrich studied in Zurich and was accepted into the ministry at the age of 22. He then went on a study trip that took him via Basel , Strasbourg , Mannheim , Mainz and Cologne to Utrecht to see the famous theologian Friedrich Adolf Lampe . When he was called to Bremen , Ulrich followed him there. Here he deepened his knowledge of rabbinical literature with a baptized Jew , then wrote the dissertation De 12 Fontibus et 70 Palmis from Israëlitis in Elim repertis and continued his rabbinical studies with Jewish scholars in Hamburg and Altona / Elbe .

In 1730 he received the parish office of Uitikon , in 1742 he became a deacon in the parish of the Holy Spirit in Zurich and in 1745 pastor at Fraumünster as well as a member of the church and school council. It was here that he first came into contact with the Jews of Lengnau and Endingen in what is now the canton of Aargau for the purpose of “flattering introduction of the Jewish mission” and in 1750 took part in the inauguration of the newly built Lengnau synagogue .

Ulrich was also known as the editor of the Zurich Bible ; He provided the Biblia of 1755/1756, which was later named after him Ulrichbibel , with prefaces, many interpretations and uses ... and necessary concordances .
