Johannschicht (born March 8, 1855 in Ringelshain , Bohemia, † June 3, 1907 in Aussig ) was an Austrian industrialist and founder of a soap factory.

Life

Johann's father, Georgschicht the Elder (1820–1887), a farmer and butcher with nine children, started soap production in his house in Ringelshain in 1848. His professional success enabled him to set up a soap factory in a new building in 1867. In 1878 he handed over the company, named Georgschicht, to his sons Josef (1851–1923), Franz (1853–1924) and Johann - his son Heinrich (1857–1929) was later accepted. Another brother was Georgschicht (1849–1913). Georg Layer was the name of the company until 1951.

In 1873 Johann Layer had the idea to relocate production to Aussig in order to reduce transport problems for raw materials. In 1880 he realized his idea and built between the districts of Kramoly and Novosedlice, in Střekov, today a district of Aussig.

Johann Layer was an active member of various trade and cultural institutions. In 1898 he was honored for his involvement in the Austro-Hungarian industry. Shift can be compared to other old Austrian entrepreneurs such as Tomáš Baťa or Emil von Škoda in that he built up a large corporate empire with an eye on social aspects as well as modern technology.

Companies

From 1885 the small company with 12 employees at the time grew rapidly and sold a lot of other items such as candles, margarine, water glass , stearin and glycerin . Deer soap , which was produced from the end of the 19th century until 2002, was very popular .

In 1894, at the hygienic exhibition in Vienna, the Georgschicht company in Aussig ad Elbe was awarded the gold medal for its “patent soap” .

By 1900 at the latest, Wilhelmschicht founded the “Ceres” nutrient works in Ringelshain , named after the goddess Ceres . This brand name subsequently referred to numerous foods, initially fruit juices from Ringelshain, and from 1905 at the latest, mainly coconut fat from Ringelshain and Aussig, and is still in use today.

The company also built its own machine factory and forge, operated coal mines and power plants. It also invested in some chemical and food manufacturing companies. A branch was established in Mährisch Ostrau in 1906 .

Due to health problems, Johann Layer converted his company into a stock corporation in 1906 , of which the Layer family owned 80%. When Johann Shift died in 1907, the company had 1,800 employees. His son Heinrich Shift succeeded Johann as head of the company.

After the gradual (1912–1913) purchase of the company Emanuel Khuner & Sohn ( Kunerol brand ), with which Shift had been in fierce competition since 1906, the margarine factory in Vienna - Atzgersdorf was built in 1923 . In 1929 the industry, among them that was out of ten companies Georg layer AG , the Unilever Austria founded in 1939 after the connection merged with Unilever Germany. The Kuner brand is still used by Unilever.
