Johann Schopenhauer

Johann Schopenhauer (* 1670 ; † after 1724 ) was a merchant in Danzig and great-grandfather of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer .

Life

The ancestors on his father's side were farmers in Danzig Werder. The father Johann Schoppenhauer had a farm in Petershagen (today Żelikowo) and in 1695 became a village mayor there. The mother Maria Pfeiler came from Elbing . Johann (II.) Was probably born on his parents' estate in Petershagen. In 1688 he had a birth certificate issued in Elbing. In 1695 he received the citizenship of Danzig. Johann (II.) Schopenhauer was the first merchant in the family on his father's side. There may have been merchants in the maternal family.

In 1708 Johann Schopenhauer and his brother Simon leased the Stutthof estate, the largest estate in the city of Danzig outside the city walls. According to family tradition, the Russian Tsar Peter I and his niece Katharina Ivanovna stayed there in 1716 . In 1724 the brothers returned the domain to the city of Danzig. After that, no more messages have been received about him.
