Catherine Ivanovna, Grand Duchess of Russia

Grand Duchess Katharina Ivanovna of Russia ( Russian Екатерина Ивановна ; * 20 October July / 30 October  1691 greg. In Moscow ; † 14 June 1733 ) was a daughter of Tsar Ivan V and Praskovia Fyodorovna Saltykova , eldest sister of Empress Anna of Russia and niece of Peter I the Great . After her marriage she was Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Life

Catherine was the third-born daughter of Tsar Ivan V and his wife Empress Praskowja Fyodorovna Saltykowa . With the death of her older sisters, Maria Ivanovna (* March 24, 1689 - February 14, 1692) and Feodosiya Ivanovna (* June 4, 1690 - May 12, 1691) she became the eldest daughter of the tsarist couple. She is said to have been her mother's favorite daughter.

Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

On April 19, 1716 she married Duke Karl Leopold in Danzig. The marriage was unhappy, and the quarrelsome duke was often rude, and at times even brutal, with his wife. In 1722 Katharina Ivanovna left her husband with her daughter and returned to Russia forever. The only daughter Anna Leopoldowna , born in 1718, became regent for her son Tsar Ivan VI in 1740 . , but was overthrown in 1741.
