Johann Skondelev († August 17, 1421 ) was Bishop of Schleswig from 1375 to 1421 .

Live and act

It is not documented where Johann Skondelev came from. He is only mentioned once as a Franciscan under the name of Johann de Gudensberg . King Waldemar IV appointed him Bishop of Schleswig in 1375, which raised contradictions in the cathedral chapter and the Counts of Holstein. Since Skondelev was willing to pay off all debts of the diocese and to pay servitien in large amounts, the Pope installed him.

On April 25, 1382 Skondelev was appointed papal collector and nuncio. He held these offices until about 1407. In 1409 Cardinal Giovanni Dominici Skondelev appointed Bishop of Cammin . When Pope Alexander V wanted to transfer the Camminer bishopric to Magnus von Sachsen-Lauenburg a little later , a process came about that ended on July 14, 1418 with Skondelev's defeat. Skondelev had previously spoken out clearly in favor of the Danish crown and, due to the resulting dissatisfaction with the cathedral chapter and the Counts of Holstein, apparently hoped to find a job outside of Schleswig.

Skondelev, who after Gerhard VI was enfeoffed. had sworn allegiance to the count with the Duchy of Schleswig in 1389, after his death in 1404 turned to the side of the Danish crown. He made the castles of Schwabstedt and Stubbe, which were owned by the bishop, available to the Danish Queen Margarethe I as pledge. The Holstein nobility occupied these castles in 1411.

In 1409 several Holstein nobles attacked Skondelev and kidnapped him to Flensburg . The prisoner was released on payment of 1200 Marks Lübisch and immediately afterwards sued the Curia against his opponents, who in his opinion also included members of the cathedral chapter. One of his opponents was Provost Heinrich von See.

During the Diet in Nyborg in 1413, Skondelev positioned himself on the side of the Danish King Erich III. and his view that the Duchy of Schleswig had been returned to Denmark. Together with Bishop Peder Lykke , he also represented this position during the Council of Constance in 1414. During the Landsting in Viborg in 1421 , Skondelev testified that Denmark had a right to the Duchy of Schleswig. He was the last bishop from Schleswig to support the Danish crown.

Skondelev died a little later. Since he had often stayed outside of Schleswig, but also because of disputes as a result of the positions represented shortly before his death, the diocese of Schleswig lost significant assets.
