Johann Theobald Christ (born May 25, 1777 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 11, 1841 there ) was a German doctor and patron.

Life path

Christ was born as the son of the cantor of the St. Catherine's Church in Frankfurt, Johann Balthasar Christ. He grew up at a time when it was not yet taken for granted that sick children from poor families received medical care. The Christian behaved Johann Theobald studied at the University of Marburg first Jura , but then decided to become a doctor, studied medicine and received his doctorate in 1802. In the same year he was admitted as a doctor in Frankfurt am Main. He practiced very successfully, was extremely busy and also made a name for himself as one of the most frequented obstetricians in Frankfurt. He trained midwives in courses with theoretical and practical teaching units . He had an extremely good reputation and was very popular. Christ is described as very fond of children. He remained unmarried and childless. His house, in which he also practiced, was on the corner of Theobald Strasse and Hanauer Landstrasse.

As he got older, the committed physician suffered from a spinal cord disease caused by his job, which ultimately tied him to a wheelchair.

At the suggestion of his friend, the doctor and secret Nassau court advisor Salomon Stiebel, Christ decreed in 1835 for the time after his death that his estate in the amount of 150,000 guilders for "poor and sick children between 4 and 12 years" of all denominations and for the establishment of a "separate hospital" and - as far as possible with its means - an affiliated maternity hospital should be used. According to his ruling, the maternity hospital was intended for “poor women who are subject to local civil and homeland law”. After Christ's death, Salomon Stiebel took on the task of putting the legacy into practice.

1861: Christ's Children's Hospital on Theobald Strasse north of Hanauer Landstrasse

Two years after his death, on August 13, 1843, the foundation stone was laid for the new institution, which opened as Christ's Children's Hospital on January 14, 1845 and was soon called "Spitälchen" by the Frankfurters. It was to the east of the system ring, on the eastern side of the Theobald Straße (today: Theobald-Christ-Straße), which was named after him, near the Pfingstweide, a green area used by the Frankfurt line battalion as a parade ground.

Christ's estate was subsequently supplemented by generous donations from well-known Frankfurt citizens and institutions to include amounts that not only enabled the children's hospital to run on a long-term basis, but also later enabled the immediately adjacent maternity hospital to be built. Another children's hospital was also built on the other side of the Main in the Sachsenhausen district .

The area of Christ's Children's Hospital is still in use today, meanwhile by the Clementine Children's Hospital .
