biography

Little is known about the origins of Johann Ulrich von Wallich. He was baptized on August 3, 1624 in Weimar. At that time Weimar was the royal seat of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar . Its dukes were involved in the Thirty Years' War on the Protestant side so that Saxony was networked with the hegemonic power of Sweden . So Wallich came to Sweden at some point.

From 1651 he was the Royal Swedish Secretary in Stade . The city was the administrative center of the Swedish territory of Bremen-Verden and Wallich was part of the staff of Governor General Hans Christoph von Königsmarck . Apart from a few trips, he stayed in Stade until his death.

In his capacity as secretary in 1657/58 he accompanied the Swedish ambassador Gotthard Wellink on a diplomatic trip to Constantinople . He later wrote a book about his impressions of Islam during this mission. After his return from Turkey, there was a devastating fire in Stade in May 1659, in which he lost his valuable library. In the same year he published a book about this disaster.

When the Swedish King and Duke of Bremen-Verden Karl X. Gustav died in February 1660 , Wallich was in Stockholm. He was immediately commissioned by the interim government to provide the Stade government with the first temporary information. In 1661 Wallich was accepted as a member of the Fruit Bringing Society and on September 1 was elevated to the Swedish nobility. In 1662 he accompanied the Swedish ambassador Per Sparre to Regensburg and Vienna as chief clerk. In 1663 Wallich was appointed to the 5th judiciary. This office was retained until his death. On July 7, 1663 he married Catharina Oelgard Wyneken. Elsewhere it is reported that his wife was called Catharina Oelgarten von Weinnichen and that the wedding took place on May 20th. In 1670 he was appointed consistorial councilor.

Wallich died on May 23, 1673 in Stade. His funeral took place on June 19th.
