Johann Viktor Besenval von Brunnstatt (baptized June 26, 1671 in Solothurn ; † March 11, 1736 in Paris ) was a French field marshal , colonel , politician and envoy .

Life

Besenval was a son of Johann Viktor Besenval von Brunnstatt (1638–1713) and brother of Peter Joseph (1675–1736) and Karl Jakob (1677–1738). From 1680 to 1688 he attended the Jesuit grammar school in Solothurn and was then a cadet in the Swiss Guard regiment . In 1689 he became a councilor and captain in the Swiss Alt-Salis regiment, in 1691 an infantry colonel in the French army and in 1704 a brigadier. In 1705 he became a knight of the Order of St. Ludwig . In 1707 he became the extraordinary French envoy to Charles XII. of Sweden and was then envoy to Stanislaus I. Leszczyński of Poland until 1709 . In 1710 he became Maréchal de camp and in 1711 Minister Plenipotentiary to the Powers of the North ( pays du Nord ). From 1713 to 1721 he was the extraordinary French envoy to August II of Poland . In 1716 he married Katharina Bielinska, daughter of the Polish Grand Marshal Kasimir Ludwig Bielinski ; Peter Viktor von Besenval was their son. In 1719 he became lieutenant general and in 1722 lieutenant colonel in the French army. From 1722 to 1736 he was a colonel in the Swiss Guard regiment. Besenval was also the second beneficiary of the Waldegg substitution .
