In preparation for his work at the Karlsruhe Institute for the Deaf and Mute, Hemeling visited institutions for the deaf and mute in Giessen, Leipzig and Vienna between 1782 and 1784 to find out about the teaching methods used there; from 1784 to 1793 he was a teacher at the deaf-mute institute in Karlsruhe. From 1785 he also taught English at the Grand Ducal High School, which later became the Bismarck High School in Karlsruhe . Hemeling was a freemason in the Zinnendorf system in Karlsruhe and in 1786 became a member of the Viennese Freemason lodge "To the truth".

From 1792 Hemeling finally worked as court librarian and was appointed first librarian in 1805. In 1808 he was appointed Privy Councilor and succeeded Friedrich Valentin Molter as head of the court library. His period of service was marked by the consequences of taking over the secularized monastery property. In doing so, Hemeling “subjected himself to the work with great skill and, in particular, demonstrated a very respectable knowledge of books”.
