Johann Wilhelm Simler (born August 29, 1605 in Zurich ; † March 14, 1672 there ) was a Swiss poet of the Baroque period .

Life

Simler comes from a Zurich academic family. He studied theology in Zurich and received his doctorate in Geneva in 1627 . After several educational trips abroad, he received his first pastorate in Uetikon , later went to Herrliberg , where he married in 1631. However, the preaching profession did not appeal to him, so that he was assigned a church inspectorate, which he held all his life. After a relatively uneventful life with his family, he died in his hometown.

Simler was the first Swiss poet to adopt the new rules from Martin Opitz , and at the same time stands at the beginning of High German poetry in his home country.
