Johann Wolfgang Frölicher (baptized 29. June 1652 in Solothurn , † 26. April 1700 in Trier ) was a native of Switzerland, sculptor of the Baroque .

life and work

Johann Wolfgang Frölicher was the son of the innkeeper and trader Johann Ulrich Frölicher the Elder and Anna Maria Graf. Happier. Based on stylistic clues, it can be assumed that he received his artistic training outside of Solothurn, possibly in the Netherlands or Italy. However, self-study using graphic templates also appears possible.

In 1676 Fröhlicher settled in Frankfurt am Main , where he married Anna Maria Hepper, with whom he had eleven children, and in 1683 became a citizen of Frankfurt. He was active in and around Frankfurt am Main, Mainz and Trier. He created numerous furnishings for churches and funerary monuments. He was buried in the cloister of Trier Cathedral , a marble tablet referring to his grave has been in the cloister again since 2015 after it had been kept in a museum's depot for a long time. His brother was the sculptor Johann Peter Frölicher , one of his students Cornelius Andreas Donett .
