Johann von Vásáry , in Spain Juan Vaszary , born János Vaszary (born January 1 or January 10, 1899 in Budapest , † November 20, 1963 in Madrid ) was a Hungarian theater actor , theater director , theater director , writer , film director and screenwriter at the Hungarian, Austrian and German film.

Live and act

János Vaszary, mostly managed as Johann von Vásáry in Germany, volunteered for the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1916 and decided to change his profession when he returned to civilian life. In 1920 he began to appear at the Magyar Theater. In 1923 he made his directorial debut at the József-Katona-Theater, also in the Hungarian capital, and in the same year also worked in a film ( Egri csillagok ). In 1925 Vaszary stayed temporarily in Paris, but returned to Hungary the following year. From 1927 to 1929 he directed the Magyar Theater and was later also involved in the management of other theaters, for example in the 1932/33 season as artistic director of the Terézkörúti stage, followed by a two-year stint as director of the Andrássy Street Theater and in 1933/34 as director of the Budapest operetta and music theater as well as the National Theater (1936) and again (1941–1944) the Andrássy Street Theater.

During this time Vaszary was intensively involved in the creation of plays and scripts for Hungarian and Austrian films - mainly romances, music films and comedies - and directed ten films between 1937 and 1944. Some of his works were filmed in Germany during the Second World War (the two Heinz Rühmann fun games I entrust you my wife and tell the truth ) and even in Hollywood ( I Married an Angel ). With his manuscripts for the box office success, I love you! with his compatriot Marika Rökk and to the comedy What happened that night? with his wife, the actress Lili Muráti (1911–2003), in the lead role, Vásáry was also involved in German productions. Johann von Vásáry also wrote the screenplay for the biggest Rökk success, the box-office film revue The Woman of My Dreams . In those years, too, the Budapest-born director also directed ten Hungarian films, beginning with the comedy I entrust you with my wife, which he wrote himself and produced by the very young Gyula Trebitsch in 1936 .

As a result of the occupation of his homeland by the Red Army (1944/45), János Vaszary fled Hungary and emigrated to France on arduous hikes and begging, where he stayed in Paris for two years. He and his wife finally found a new home in Madrid via San Sebastian and Barcelona. There Vaszary returned to the theater and from 1946 until his death in 1963 he performed a number of plays such as Me casé con un ángel , Agua en los bolsillos , Los mejores años de nuestra tía , Solo vivimos un día , El drama de la familia invisible , El dinero no hace feliz , Eva no salió del Paraíso , El escándalo del alma desnuda , Sinceridad and Mi marido no me entiende for the performance. The Spaniard by choice hardly ever returned to film; there is evidence of a script contribution to the German film Du bist Musik and to the Spanish television series La tragedia de un angel , his last work, which started in the year he died.

János Vaszary's brother Gábor von Vaszary (1897–1985) also worked as a writer, while his sister Piri Vaszary (1901–1965) was an actress.
