Johanna Charlotte von Anhalt-Dessau (born April 6, 1682 in Dessau , † March 31, 1750 in Herford ) was a Princess of Anhalt-Dessau from the house of the Ascanians and by marriage Margravine of Brandenburg-Schwedt . From 1729 until her death she was Princess Abbess of Herford .

Life

Johanna Charlotte was the youngest daughter of Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau (1627–1693) from his marriage to Henriette Katharina (1637–1708), daughter of Prince Friedrich Heinrich of Orange . The princess was carefully and extensively trained.

She married Margrave Philipp Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Schwedt (1669-1711) in Oranienbaum on January 25, 1699 . Although the couple had their own castles in Berlin, they mostly lived in Schwedt . After the death of her husband, Johanna Charlotte returned to Berlin and took care of the upbringing of her children.

In 1729 she was elected abbess of the Herford Monastery, which was under Prussian protection. On October 10th, the new abbess was solemnly inducted, but initially lived in Buchholz. It was not until 1735 that she took up permanent residence in Herford. During her tenure in 1729 she founded the Order of the Free World Monastery and accepted 17 canonesses. She appointed Hedwig Sophie von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf as her coadjutor , who became her successor.

Johanna Charlotte died without prior illness on the night of March 30th to March 31st, 1750 at the " Schlagfluss ". She was buried in the recently renewed vault of Herford's collegiate chapel.
