Johanna Ewald

Johanna Ewald (born February 15, 1885 in Dresden , German Empire , † January 27, 1961 in Berlin , Germany ) was a German actress .

Life

She has been on vaudeville stages since childhood and became known in Berlin at the Lustspielhaus , the Theater des Westens , the Scala , the Wintergarten and the Komische Oper . In Vienna she performed at the Ronacher establishment and at the Volksoper . The 1.86 meter tall comedian distinguished herself primarily through her skits and singing numbers.

Oskar Messter brought her in front of the camera in 1897 for the short comedy Gestörtes Rendez-Vous , and thus she became the first well-known stage actress who dared to appear in cinematography , which was still in its infancy . She was then seen more often in films, where she embodied strange women in mostly very short appearances.
