Johannes Müller Monument (Koblenz)
The Johannes Müller Memorial in Koblenz is a memorial in honor of the city-born physician Johannes Müller . It is located in the old town in the center of Jesuitenplatz in front of the town hall of Koblenz .
history
The privately financed monument was inaugurated on October 7, 1899 on Jesuitenplatz in Koblenz. The keynote address was given by Müller's former student Rudolf Virchow . The statue is the work of the Berlin sculptor Joseph Uphues .
After the Second World War, the monument was moved to Südallee in 1951 for traffic reasons. After the Jesuitenplatz had been redesigned to be car-free, it returned to its old location in 1986.
construction
The Johannes Müller monument, which is slightly raised by flat steps in the middle of the Jesuitenplatz, stands on a high granite base and is therefore a defining feature of the square. A larger than life bronze figure by Johannes Peter Müller rises above it. The name Johannes Müller and his life dates 1801–1858 are carved on the front of the base , on the back it reads: “Dem great anatomist u. Physiologists established in his hometown in 1899 ” .
Monument protection
The Johannes Müller Monument is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is on Jesuit Square .
The Johannes Müller Memorial has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .
