Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in Gersthofer Straße

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel is a building at the intersection of Gersthofer Straße and Salierigasse in the 18th district of Währing , district of Gersthof . The depiction of Johannes Nepomuk in it is one of many in Vienna.

history

The statue of Johannes Nepomuk was donated by the trader Claudius Scharet in 1724 and placed on the bridge over the Währinger brook running here . Presumably through vandalism , she lost her head three times during the 1870s, and each time it was found in the creek bed. Necessary repairs were the result.

Ludwig Riedl (1858–1919), operator of one of the most prominent Viennese cafés and resident of the nearby villa at Ferrogasse  6, had the statue renovated in 1907 and the small wayside chapel built to protect it. To cover the cost of maintaining it, he also set up a foundation that was deposited with the church treasury in the form of a state pension obligation.

description

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel was built between 1905 and 1907 according to plans by the architect Arnold Heymann (1870–1950) (dedicatory inscription: 1907).

The chapel with the small, square interior is a secessionist building with a mansard roof , pilasters and a secessionist lattice. The domed interior has pilasters. Opposite the glass door is a round glass window with a representation of praying angels.
