List of depictions of Johannes Nepomuk in Vienna

Johannes Nepomuk , canonized in 1729, is considered the third most frequently depicted saint in Austria after Maria and Joseph and is often seen as the protection of bridges. There are Johannes Nepomuk representations in Vienna at numerous locations, especially on or next to bridges or where they were once (if later a body of water was piped or enclosed).

Already after the plague epidemic in 1679/1680, during which Johannes Nepomuk was asked for help as plague saint, his veneration in Vienna can be proven. The oldest known statue of Johannes Nepomuk in Vienna was built in 1694 and is now in a house on the farmers' market. More statues followed in 1702 and 1704.

Eight line chapels and a few other smaller chapels were consecrated to Johannes Nepomuk, most of which have disappeared from the cityscape. "Big" churches consecrated to the saint are only found on Migazziplatz in Meidling and on Praterstrasse in Leopoldstadt.

		Johannes Nepomuk Altar	Petersplatz, Peterskirche	Lorenzo Mattielli	1729	The Johannes Nepomuk Altar, probably created around 1729 by Lorenzo Mattielli , is considered to be one of the greatest sculptural representations of the suffering of the saint. Two antiquated henchmen are depicted throwing the saint off the bridge while the commander gives the appropriate order with a gesture. In the fall, a putti brings the martyr's palm. The Madonna of Alt-Bunzlau hovers above this representation.

Because of the installation of an outflow fountain ("Bassena") for the Kaiser-Ferdinand's water pipe, it was then moved to the corner by Säulengasse. Around the turn of the century until 1965 it was in the garden of the Canisius Church (Pulverturmgasse 13), then in front of the parish office (Lustkandlgasse 34). With the redesign of the square at the end of the 20th century, the statue returned to Sobieski Square.

		Statue of John Nepomuk	Canavesegasse, Liesing District Museum			Since August 2009 there has been a statue of Johannes Nepomuk in the district museum in Liesing. The statue originally stood in a wall niche on Erlaaer Straße. In the course of demolition work, the work of art was removed and could not initially be found again. After its rediscovery, the statue was restored and given to the district museum as a permanent loan.
		Johannes Nepomuk Chapel	Endresstrasse			At the house at Endresstraße 93 there is a Johannes Nepomuk chapel built by Sebastian Cichine in 1719 and renovated in 1750 with a domed interior and rocaille stucco . There is a statue of John Nepomuk on the altar.
		Statue of John Nepomuk	Fröhlichgasse coordinates are missing! Help.			In the entrance of the house at Fröhlichgasse 42 there is a figure of Johannes Nepomuk.
		Statue of John Nepomuk	Flood alley			At the western end of the wall of the so-called Maria-Theresien-Schlössl stands a statue of Johannes Nepomuk from the middle of the 18th century in a segmented arch niche below an arched protective roof.

		Johannes Nepomuk Chapel	Promenade way			On the promenade at the Stelzersteg there is a Johannes Nepomuk chapel built in 1766. The statue of Johannes Nepomuk, renovated in 1984, dates from the second quarter of the 18th century.
		Johannes Nepomuk Altar	Rodauner Kirchenplatz, Bergkirche Rodaun Coordinates are missing! Help.			The altar erected as a counter pulpit shows a figure of John Nepomuk in clouds above the volute base , framed by canopies .
