The Döblinger Pfarrkirche (Parish Church St. Paul) is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Oberdöbling district in the 19th district of Döbling , at Kardinal-Innitzer-Platz 1.

history

The first mention of a church in Döbling comes from the year 1267, when an Ecclesia in Tobelico (church in Döbling) was mentioned in a document. However, their location is unknown. From the 15th century onwards, the names of the pastors in Döblingen can be traced back to the church. In the 15th century, the church was first destroyed by Matthias Corvinus , but quickly rebuilt. In 1640 the existing parish Döbling was dissolved and added to the parish of the Währing parish church . After the church was destroyed again in 1683 during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna , only security work was carried out. The services were now held temporarily in the Johann von Nepomuk Chapel (today: Döblinger Hauptstrasse 83). The building was only restored after Joseph II's parish reform and Döbling's elevation to its own parish. However, the church soon proved to be too small and was brought into its present form from 1826 to 1828 according to plans by Josef Reininger and consecrated to St. Paul .

Architecture and equipment

inner space

The church is designed around a baroque central area and, thanks to its temple-like appearance, has been built in the style of the time it was built. Important works of art in the Döblingen parish church are the high altar painting Conversion of St. Paul by Josef Schönmann (1829), the side altar paintings by J. Kreßler, the pulpit from the early 19th century and a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 18th century. In front of the church there are stone figures of St. Erasmus (early 18th century) and St. John Nepomuk (around 1800).

The organ of the Döblingen parish church was built by Gerhard Hradetzky and has 2 manuals and a pedal .
